This is what I learned about the Greek Olympics. It began in 776 B.C.E. The Olympics were was held at the bottom of Mt. Olympus. The Olympics were a religious gathering that was held every four years. It was held in the honor of Zeus and other gods and they glorified the abilities of man. The festival was a week long ceremony that had sporting events such as: foot racing, javelin, discus throwing, chariot racing, horse racing, wrestling, boxing, and the pentathlon. The winners were given laurel wreathes as a prize. They were held in great esteem in their home town for the rest of their lives, and never had to pay taxes. The Olympics ended in 394 C.E because earthquakes destroyed Olympia. It was restarted by a man in France named Barron Pierre de Coubertin in 1896 and the Olympics is still alive today. That is what I learned about the Greek Olympics.

  1. Great report on the Olympics! I loved the part that the winners of the events did not have to pay taxes the rest of their lives – wow! That would be a very desirable prize. It is so much fun to watch the games nowadays because they inspire many people to be more active and to reach their goals.
